Reflection on Sultan’s presentation

Topic: Desert pollution

Sultan started the presentation by welcoming everyone and explained that he was going to talk about desert pollution. He had nearly 20 picture slides of the desert; some he took when he went camping in Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah in winter. Sultan was confident; he went through the slides explaining why desert pollution is dangerous especially to animals and the environment.

 Winter is the time to go to the desert in the U.A.E. when people run away from traffic and noise to relax but bad habits come along with them, like garbage disposal. A lot of campers don’t clean up what they leave behind especially plastic bags, plastic bottles and glass or aluminum cans. When campers leave food, animals will eat everything even plastic bags and that causes animals to choke. Sultan showed some solutions the government came up with like in January 2012; the foreign minister of the U.A.E. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan pointed out on his account in tweeter encouraging the people to participate in a desert cleaning campaign; the response was very good and a lot of people joined the campaign.

 He also showed some solutions the government made, like developing desert reserves; the most famous are Qasr Al Sarab in Liwa, Al Maha resort in Dubai and Banyan resort in Ras Al Khaimah. As Sultan was going through the slides he answered questions clearly.

Subject: Apple founder

Othman opened the presentation with a slide showing the co-founder of Apple (Steve Jobs). He explained in detail the history of the co-founder. He showed photos of Jobs' real parents and explained why they give him and his sister for adoption. Then he showed a photo of Steve Wozniak who is an engineer and co-founder of Apple. He explained how these two met and started their idea in one garage of Steve Jobs' family house and turns their idea to a multi billion-dollar company. Othman concentrated on Jobs' life from the time he dropped out of college, showing most of the technological inventions he participated in with his friend up to Steve Jobs' death.

Body language: Othman was confident & knowledgeable.

On Sunday 11^th March 2012 we organized a meeting at the ADMC discussing the increase of teenage smokers in the UAE. We were happy that Mr. Hedley attended the meeting; all the group was on time.

The chairman started with the first item, the increase of teenage smokers in the UAE; all the group agreed that it is a major problem that the government should take action to stop. Hedley suggested that the government must force tobacco companies to pay taxes if they want to sell their product; the chairman also added malls and restaurants who allow smoking must be fined if they ignore the law.

In my view the meeting went well and the group participated in an organized way; one thing I didn’t like is the meeting room because it was small.

Chairman Sultan opened the meeting at 1035, welcomed everyone and started with the agenda.

Good morning gentlemen. 

I'd like to call the meeting to order to discuss the problem of smoking among teenagers in the society.

1-Increase of teenage smokers.

Hazza said it is a real problem and that the UAE government and the society must work carefully about this matter.

Hedley asked if there are rules not to sell cigarettes to underage youths. He gave an example in UK shops are not allowed to sell cigarettes to underage youths or they will be fined and the shop may be closed.

Jasem said there is a law but greed is forcing shops to sell and also if they didn't, the father or big brother will ask the underage brother to go and buy cigarettes for them because the salesman knows the father or brother so they will sell it for them thinking it is for the father or brother.

2-Smoking in public.

Sultan said most of the public areas allow smoking especially in cafes and surrounding areas.

Hedley said when he goes to the club restaurant there is no special area for smokers and it bothers him.

Jasem agreed with Hedley.

Hazza said that he doesn't know where to go at weekends and have dinner with his family specially in big malls.

3-Tobacco companies.

Jasem said that the government should force these companies and try to reduce them.

Hedley agreed but he said that it is a very complicated business because these companies pay a lot of taxes and that money goes to the health system so it is one way to reduce the country’s expenses on the health system, especially in the UK.

Hazza agreed with Hedley but he said that in the UAE there are no taxes so the government can force these companies.

4-Society awareness.

Sultan said that the lack of awareness in the community is a big problem because some people will take their children to these cafes and smoke in front of them, so when these kids become teenagers it becomes a habit.

Hazza and Jasem agreed.

Hedley said that media should take part in promoting awareness in the community in all possible ways.

In conclusion we thought that:

1-Underage youths should not be allowed to buy cigarettes or shishas either in shops or cafes.

2-Government must force and fine public places like malls if they ignored the smoking law.

3-Government must force tobacco companies to pay taxes if they want to sell their product.

4-Society and media should work together to enlighten people of the danger of smoking.

Position: team leader

Hedley welcomed Sultan and introduced the other interviewers. First of all introduce yourself.  Sultan: I’m 31 years old, single and I work in ADGAS. Why do you want to change your company? I want to get a high position.

Fahad: what’s your greatest weakness? I don’t like the employee that gets benefit from other weak employees. What’s your outside interest? My outside interest is to play football.

Sultan: what is the company cycle for the operation section?

Fahad: 3 weeks work 1 week off.

Sultan: how about salary?

Fahad: 50,000 per month. Sultan was not happy with this offer.

Before the interview finished Ahmed gave Sultan a best offer of 100,000 thousand per month.

The interview closed at 11:00 am .
